Lot Essay
Found in a Builders' Merchants' yard in Waterford, where it was used for breaking down putty. (See Mealy's, Castlecomen auction, 9-10th March 1999, lot 382.) The transposition of the '7' and '0' of the date and the inversion of the '4' and the 'M' of MADE are an indication of the probable illiteracy of the foundryman.
