A very large Queen Anne leaded bronze mortar by Henry Paris of Dublin, early 17th century
the waisted bowl with reeded banding, the flared rim inscribed ROBERT DAVENPORT HIS MORTAR WADE BY HP1074 (sic) with decorative stamps of fruiting vine -- 14¾in. (38cm.) high, 17in. (43.2cm.) wide at rim

Lot Essay

Found in a Builders' Merchants' yard in Waterford, where it was used for breaking down putty. (See Mealy's, Castlecomen auction, 9-10th March 1999, lot 382.) The transposition of the '7' and '0' of the date and the inversion of the '4' and the 'M' of MADE are an indication of the probable illiteracy of the foundryman.
