Notes:
1. Wei Zhihuang, sobriquet name Kaoshu, was a native of Nanjing. He started very poor and sold paintings for a living. His calligraphy took after the Huangting jing, and he painted landscapes from out of his own inspiration, never taking after any ancient master or copies. Each painting by Wei was distinct and he never painted a second based on or similar to the first. In his later years, he painted with a hard brush and thick ink, but was also able to paint flowers with light ink which were naturalistic and elegant.
