1957 PORSCHE 356A 1600 SUPER CABRIOLET

Engine: flat four, air cooled, two twin Zenith carburetors, 1,582cc, 60bhp at 4,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: front, independent with trailing arms, shock absorbers, torsion bars, rear, compensating leaf spring, torsion bars; Brakes: drums all round. Right hand drive.
When the Porsche 356A was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in the autumn of 1955, the motoring press responded to it with a strong and positive reaction. In a 1955 article on the sporty new cars published in Autocar the writers raved, 'to drive a Porsche is to experience a new form of motoring, so refreshingly different is it from the usual run of vehicles.' The reaction was consistent across the board and the little cars gained themselves a loyal crowd of followers. Over the course of the next several years Porsche altered the body designs only minimally and rather than implement drastic body changes, they offered a variety of power plant choices instead. Additionally minor styling improvements like the one piece windscreen and deluxe wheelcaps were also adopted and smoothed the car's overall look.
This ultra rare right hand drive example, believed to be one of only 72 cars built in 1956, was originally exported new in January of 1957 to Jebsen & Co. in Hong Kong in the colour scheme that it has retained to this day.
This matching numbers vehicle was purchased by the current owner in 1988 as part of a high quality and extensive private collection and has been little used, having however been maintained and serviced regularly, which accounts for its outstanding presentation in all respects. The vehicle can only be described as an excellent driver, immaculately restored and a very rare example of a 356 A Cabriolet which would be an admired entrant in Porsche UK club events whether on the concours field or on outings of the 356 register. An owner's manual and a copy of the Porsche archive extract come with the car.
The vehicle is currently registered and duty paid in the EU and would therefore require registration with the DVLA for road use in the UK.
