1961 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD II LONG WHEELBASE LIMOUSINE WITH DIVISION

Long Wheelbase versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud - about £2,000 more expensive than the standard cars - were offered from September 1957, four inches being inserted behind the central pillar by coachbuilders Park Ward to make space for an electrically operated glass division, giving the owner privacy when being driven by a chauffeur and, of course, improved leg room. The glass panel would be lowered out of sight when the car was being used as an owner-driven saloon at weekends or on holiday. It added 1½ cwt to the weight of the Silver Cloud which, when fitted with the new all-aluminium V8 engine in 1959, was a 113mph car with much better acceleration, particularly above 70 or 80mph. Only 10 percent of all Cloud II chassis were completed to Long Wheelbase specification.
The car offered for sale today was sold new in February 1961, to The Right Honourable Lord Sherbourne of Lodge Park, Aldsworth, Gloucestershire. At his request the handbrake and gearbox quadrant were fitted to his specific requirements as recorded on the original factory order, however otherwise the car was completed to standard specifications. The car was finished then, as it is today in Midnight blue livery, and upholstered in beige hide.
Lord Sherbourne's time of ownership is not detailed in build sheets, and there are no further notes of ownership or information supplied with the car, until it was purchased by the present owner. However, there are substantial bills for work carried out in the late-1980s and early 1990s, prior to the vendor's acquisition. These account for over £26,000 of work which in essence amounts to a progressive restoration or refurbishment of most aspects, with the exception of the engine. Whilst in current ownership, the Long Wheelbase Cloud has continued to be cared for in a similar manner, with only work completed by factory trained specialists at his request as and when necessary.
It is equipped with air conditioning to the front and rear compartments, all windows and division are electrically operated, and in the rear there is a modern Sony stereo and fold down picnic tables.
Copies of factory build sheets, invoices, and expired MoT certificates, together with a current certificate and road fund licence are sold with the car. Its distinctive registration number AD 6666 is also included.
