DOMAINE TEMPIER--BANDOL
Domaine Tempier, located in Southern France makes some of Bandols finest wines. Owned and operated by the Tempier family since 1834, the current owner, Lucien Peyraud, is revered in the area as being instrumental in persuading reluctant growers to continue growing the Mourvèdre grape as opposed to planting more lucrative grape varieties. The appellation came into existence in 1941 when it was deemed that red wines which contain at least 50 Mourvèdre from vineyards situated on designated slopes could be zoned AC Bandol. Domaine Tempier's famous wines are produced from 10 acre vineyards situated on steep hillsides surrounding the Domaine. These vineyards are planted with 55 Mourvèdre, 23 Cinsault and 20 Grenache with a touch of Syrah and Carignan vines. The average age of the vines is thirty-five years.
Offered below are five cuvées from various vintages that illustrate the true uniqueness of each of their specific vineyards and their location within that vineyard. Cuvée Spéciale La Migoua and La Tourtine were created at the request of well known Berkeley Importer Kermit Lynch who felt that these vineyard wines deserved to be shown seperately rather than in a blend. One hectare of 45 year old Mourvèdre vines from the lowest, steepest area of the La Tourtine vineyard is used for the Cabassaou cuvée, first released in 1987. The Cuvée Spéciale La Louffe was only produced in 1987 and 1988 from the oldest vines situated within the La Migoua vineyard.
