Kongsgaard Syrah--Vintage 1998
Napa Valley
Slightly torn labels
"Readers looking for a California Syrah that has the structure of an Hermitage might do well to consider Kongsgaard's offerings. They are the antithesis of the big, delicious fruit bombs made elsewhere that are best drunk in their first 7-10 years of life. There are about 200 cases of the opaque black/purple-colored 1998 Syrah Hudson Vineyard. As John Kongsgaard said, it was made from "stupidly low yields". The wine is tight in mouth, but reveals tremendous stuffing along with scents of blackberries, licorice, earth, truffles, pepper, and graphite. Massively tannic, but sweet and rich, this wine should enjoy two decades of life." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, Issue 132, 12/23/00
