This work is accompanied by a photo-certificate from the Estate of Andy Warhol.
Sea Turtle is related to the Endangered Species series Warhol executed in 1983, and only exists in three versions. After years of depicting cats and dogs, Warhol turned to more exotic animals, such as the Siberian tiger and African elephant. In the present work, Warhol eschewed the natural coloring of the animal and opted for brilliant hues of fuschia and turquoise. He set the turtle against a dramatic backdrop of blue and yellow. Warhol based the image on a photograph taken by another photographer; in the finished painting, his additional, off-register line drawing would complete the transformation of an anonymous image into a Warhol painting.
