PAUL MUNI OUTFIT FROM "THE GOOD EARTH"
MGM, 1937
A two-piece outfit worn by Paul Muni as he portrayed Wang Lung in the multi-Academy Award nominated film based on the novel by Pearl S. Buck. Consisting of a black cotton Chinese-style shirt with a stand-up collar and frog closures and a pair of matching, loose-fitting cropped pants, this outfit was worn during the New Year celebration scene when Wang Lung holds his child on his lap then goes to see O-Lan, as portrayed by Luise Rainer, to talk about buying land. The shirt has a cloth label reading Muni and a handwritten notation on the lining reading New Years and the pants have a studio dry-cleaning tag affixed to the waistband.
