Lot Essay

Alexander Johnston was an ardent Jacobite and served under Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the battles of Prestonpans and Falkirk. He was taken captive after the fateful battle of Culloden, which, not surprisingly, effectively ended his career.

An accomplished silversmith, Johnston made, amongst other important commissions, the Oathlaw baptismal basin, dated 1742. A silver quaich, circa 1740, by Johnston, was sold at Christie's Fingask Castle house sale, 27th April 1993, lot 999
