Lot Essay

This group of Kashmiri dancers and musicians was sketched in July 1931, while Iakovlev was the official artist of the trans-Asia expedition 'La Croisière Jaune' organised by the car manufacturer Citröen. A portrait of the dancer Astor, with his hands on his hips, was drawn on 15th July; see Lucien Vogel (ed.), Alexandre Jacovleff: Dessins et Peintures d'Asie (Paris, 1934) plate 21.
