Martinus Houttuyn (1720?-1798)
Houtkunde, behelzende de Afbeeldingen van meest alle bekunde, In- en Uitlandische Houten... A Representation of Inland and Foreign Wood, as well Trees as Shrubs, which are Collected by the Lovers of Natural History in their Cabinets of Natural Curiosities for Use and Pleasure. Amsterdam: John Christian Sepp, 1773-1791-1795. 4° (306 x 240mm). Titles and text in Dutch, English, German, French and Latin. Frontispice and 106 engraved plates by Jan Christiaan Sepp, all with contemporary hand colouring, with the folding errata leaf bound in at end. Contemporary Dutch half calf gilt, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (small tears to head and foot of spine, corners bumped), supplement unbound as issued (the separatly printed title-page/upper wrapper slightly waterstained in inner margin). Provenance: Van Hooft (signature on title of main work).
A VERY FINE LARGE COPY OF THIS RARE AND FAMOUS WORK INCLUDING THE RARE SUPPLEMENT. Based on the 'Wood Cabinets' assembled by the Dutch physician Houttuyn and the Reverend Hazeu. The work was published in eighteen parts over a period of 23 years. Primarily based on Seligman's Abbildungen In- und Ausländischer Hölzer (Nuremberg 1773-1778), illustrated with 48 plates only, Jan Christiaan Sepp added another 58 engravings which concentrated on timbers from the West Indies, drawn from the cabinet of the Reverend Hazeu at Rotterdam. Other 'samples are taken from the collection of Martinus Houttyn, who added a new title-page' (Landwehr). Signing and pagination in the English table skip two leaves (F1-2 = pp XLI-XLIV) but the text of the table is complete. Nissen ZBI 939; Landwehr 84; Brunet V, 291: "Rarement complet. Il y a des exemplaires... avec 101 planches. Celui qui a été vendu chez l'Héritier n'avait que 84 planches".
