Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivum veramque accuratissime delineatae...Jardin de Fleurs contenant en soy les plus rares et plus excellentes fleurs... Divisées selon les quatre saisons de l'an.. encor cecy adjoinct, la maniere et facon qu'on les pourra depeindre... Utrecht & Arnheim: Crispian de Passe and J.Jansson, 1614-1616. 5 parts in one volume, small oblong 2° (190 x 273mm). 3 engraved titles, 4 engraved garden views, 1 allegorical plate, 161 engraved plates, extra-illustrated with six plates from a similar english work tipped into the first two parts. ('Epigramma' plate and the final plate in the second part both supplied from a smaller copy, two plates in the fourth part with neat repairs to lower blank margins.) Contemporary limp vellum, titled in early manuscript on spine. Provenance: Tremets (two signatures); Nicolas-Joseph Foucault (1643-1721, armorial bookplate); Hyacinthe-Théodore Baron, the younger (1707-1787, armorial bookplate, and inscription). Sold not subject to return.

THE FOUCAULT-BARON COPY OF THE FRENCH TEXT ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND INFLUENTIAL OF THE EARLY FLORILEGIA. There is great discrepancy between copies in the number of plates, but the present copy is made up as follows:
I. [Printemps]: Engraved title with integral circular portrait roundels of Dodoens and Clusius [Utrecht, apud Ioannem Ianssonium, 1614], as in Hunt; title in French [Utrecht & Arnhem, ches Crispian de Pas, & ches Ian Ianssoon], with 'Description des Couleurs des quatre saizons...' on verso, followed by eleven leaves of description of plates in first four parts, numbered 1-41, 1-20, 1-25 (+ 2 'Nota') and 1-12 [signed [A]-F2]; engraved title; engraved plate 'Epigramma' depicting flora embracing a cornucopia of flowers; engraved garden plan; 41 engraved numbered plates, Latin text on versos, 25 plates with insects added, at least 16 with backgrounds added.

II. [Este]: title in Latin [Utrecht & Arnhem, ex officina Hermanni Borculoi. Et Protestant apud Ioannem Iansonium], 'Index Aestivus' on verso; engraved garden plan; 20 engraved numbered plates, all but two with Latin text on verso, 1 plate with insects added.

III. [Automne]: title in Latin [Arnhem, ex officina, Ioannis Iansonii, 1616]; engraved garden plan; 27 engraved numbered plates, all but the final two with Latin text on verso, 13 with insects added.

IV. Hivers]: engraved garden plan; 12 engraved plates, all but the last with Latin text on verso, two with insects added (the final plate with the insect mounted in place).

V. [Altera pars]: letterpress sectional title with 'ad lectorum' on verso, engraved additional title [Formulis Crispiani Passaei et Joannis Waldnelii]; 61 engraved plates with Latin descriptions on versos of all but two plates, the majority of plates with added backgrounds and insects.
