A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE FROM TWO OF THE FINEST AND MOST SUMPTUOUS BOTANICAL WORKS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, illustrating a wide range of the cultivated flowers of the period. The superb watercolour and gouache painting almost entirely eclipses the engraved lines. The present selection (from the Hortus) includes 27 ornamental plants (7 signed in the plate as being after Ehret) and including hyacinths (4), tulips (4) and lilies (8). Also included (from the Plantae selectae) are fruit (2 pineapples), trees and shrubs (2 magnolia). The two works complete contain 190 and 120 plates, respectively. Cf. Dunthorne 309 & 3100; cf. Great Flower Books p.78; cf. Nissen BBI 1995 & 1997; cf. Stafleu & Cowan VI, 15.130 & 15.131.
