2° (442 x 275mm). 33 engraved charts (? only) by Thornton, of which 27 are double-page (442 x 535mm.), 4 double-page and folding, and 2 single-page. Coastal profile illustrations. (Lacking title and all text before p. 5, world map with small hole, 2 folding maps with short tear at fold, several maps shaved at margin, some light browning.) Old half calf (covers detached). Provenance: Shaw Thewlis (his presentation inscription, dated April 1849, to:) -- Warrington Museum and Library.

Thornton's maritime charts for the rare third volume of The English Pilot cover the African and Arabian coastline, India and the Far East. Of the folding maps, the two largest are of the World and the 'North Part of China, shewing all the passages and channels into the harbour of Chusan' (872 x 560mm). The maps of India include 'Bombay and Sallest,' while the final chart is of the 'Coast of New Holland.' Samuel Thornton, 'hydrographer at the signe of England Scotland and Ireland in the Minories' took over his brother John's business in 1706, and was involved as publisher in some reissues of the English Pilot. Sold as a collection of charts, not subject to return.
