Lot Essay

This lot is a study of 'Angelica' after the painting 'Roger delivering Angelica' in the Louvre, Paris. The subject is taken from Aristo's Orlando Furioso, Canto X. There is a similar work to this lot in the Sao Paolo Museo d'Arte, Brazil (painted in 1959); an oil study in the Louvre, Paris (painted in 1819) and a version in the Musée Ingres in Montauban (painted in 1841). These three are considered to be by Ingres.
