Electro-typing was patented by Elkington in 1841. The process consisted of the electro-deposition of copper, silver or gold within a graphite-coated mould. By this means facsimiles of highly elaborate cast and chased metalware and silver originals could be produced.

The present pair of spirally-fluted or Solomonic column candlesticks are based on a pair of silver candlesticks by Nicholas Mensma of Leeuwarden,1670, in the Freisch Museum Leeuwarden.
