Lot Essay

A letter set in the reverse of this picture's frame reads '24th of May 1870, Dear Sir, The little picture of an old woman in black is an early work of mine, Yours truly John Everett Millais'. The picture probably dates from 1846-7 and was presumably executed for the dealer Ralph Thomas who employed Millais to paint works of this kind.
