Grimshaw's paintings of the 1880's have a much greater breadth as he sought to accommodate the possibilities of river and city life. A comparable work to ours also entitled Prince's Dock, Hull (1887; Hull, Ferens Art Gallery) is illustrated in A. Robertson, Atkinson Grimshaw, Oxford, 1988, p. 74.
