The sitter was the son of Richard Reynell of East Ogwell, High Sheriff of Devon, and M.P. for Ashburton, and his wife Agnes Southcote. Reynell held office in the Exchequer and amassed a considerable fortune with which he purchased the manor of Ford where he built a mansion. King Charles I and the Duke of Buckingham lodged at Ford on 15 September 1625, after which Reynell was knighted. He married Lucy, daughter of Robert Brandon, Chamberlain of the City of London. A portrait of Lucy Reynell was sold in these rooms on 1 December 2000, lot 14 (£35,250).
