Lot Essay

Walker (op. cit.) speculates that this may be a portrait of the author and poet Robert Southey (1774-1843) by Hazlett, the existence of which is suggested by Coleridge in a letter to Southey of August 1803: 'Young Hazlitt has taken masterly poprtraits of me and Wordsworth, very much in the manner of Titian. He wishes to take Lamb and yours'. Comparison with recorded portraits of Southey is inconclusive although given the manner in which the sitter is portrayed and the picture's prvenance, it does seem likelly to show a number of Coleridge's circle.
