A Minton commemorative plate
painted by Lucien Besche to commemorate the marriage of Princess Beatrice to Henry of Battenburg, with a quarter-length portrait of the Princess wearing her wedding dress, signed, between a coronet and the letter B painted with 'jewels', the 'jewelled' and raised gilt border suspending crosses and fleur-de-lys, impressed mark and date code for 1885 (some jewels missing) -- 23.5cm. diam., fitted case

Lot Essay

Princess Beatrice was the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria. She married Henry of Battenberg at Whippingham Church on the Isle of Wight on the 23rd July 1885.
Lucien Besche was a French decorator working at Mintons and later Copeland. In 1885 he gave up decorating ceramics and moved to London where he painted in oil, designed costume and illustrated magazines.
