CHÂTEAU CHEVAL BLANC
Another candidate for the "best ever", or at least the best of the last century Cheval Blanc 1947, is here in magnum. Michael Broadbent's notes pay homage to the very special nature of the legendary '47, but other wines also appeal - the 1982 in double-magnum will last a lifetime and the superb '49 is "a point."
Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1947
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Lot 411 level: into neck; wine stained label; label states re-corked at the Château in 1995. Lot 412 level: into neck; label states re-corked at the Château in 1997. Lot 413 levels: very top shoulder; one capsule cut vintage branded Château cork. Lot 414 levels: very top shoulder; one capsule cut vintage branded Château cork, corks lightly raised. Lot 415 levels: five top and two just below top shoulder; lightly soiled and one winestained labels
Cheval Blanc 1947, is not only the most impressive, famous (and expensive) '47 but is unquestionably one of the greatest wines of all time. It did not put Cheval Blanc on the map, it was already there, but ut was, and is, a terrific eye-opener. It was at its recent best at a dinner of a great collector: lovely bouquet; losing its positive sweetness, though very rich and powerful (14 alcohol) with a slight tarry taste. Still impressive. At best 6 stars. M.B.
