The silvered dial signed Alexr. Dobbie, Clyde Place, Glasgow, No.65, Roman hour numerals within outer minutes dial, with Arabic five minute intermarkers, 60-5-10, et seque, gold hour and minute hands, seconds dial with blued steel hand, up-and-down dial with gold hand, the single chain-driven fusee movement with blued steel helical balance spring, with brass bowl and gimbal, in brass-bound three-tier rosewood case, the lid underside bearing a paper label inscribed Francis M. Moore, Chronometer and Watch Maker, Optician etc, 114, High Street, Belfast, the frieze bearing an ivorine label inscribed Brig. Criterion of Glasgow, Octr.1861, the sides mounted with loop handles
the dial 4in. (10cm) diam, the box 7in. (17.5cm) wide

Lot Essay

Alexander Dobbie is recorded as working at 24 Clyde Place, Glasgow 1857-1872.

The Brig Criterion was built in July 1861 at Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada by Gibbs Shipbuilders for J.& A. Edwards. Its specifications were Weight-241 tons, Length-110 feet, Breadth-26.2feet and Depth-12.2 feet. It was based at Perth Port and was surveyed in 1869 in Dundee. In 1872 the Brig's master was A.Cant.
