Lot Essay

Such heads were carried by a dancer enveloped in a large white sheet, probably representing Ebotita, the primordial ancestor of the Kuyu. During the kebekebe they put themselves under the protection of the great serpent, Ebongo. The present example probably dates from the time of World War I (William Fagg for catalogue of Josef Müller collection, 13 June 1978, lot 141)
