The cup with baluster stem on circular foot of gold, pierced and enamelled with flowers and foliage of translucent reds and greens, the stem with enamelled gold mounts, the hardstone bowl with scrolling foliage, the upscrolling handles similarly decorated

Charles Duron, the distinguished French goldsmith, exhibited gold-mounted hardstones in the Renaissanec taste at the International Exhibition in London in 1862 and Paris 1867, to considerable acclaim. A vase decorated in a similar style to this cup is in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin and another is illustrated by Howard Ricketts, Objects of Vertu, London, 1989, p. 88.
