CIRCA 1620, MAKER'S MARK CA, SOUTH GERMAN OR SWISS, WITH ANIMAL TOWN MARK
細節
A Continental silver-gilt trick drinking-cup
circa 1620, maker's mark CA, South German or Swiss, with animal town mark
On spreading foot, chased with a band of figures and flowers on a matted ground and with a band of winged cherubim above, the detachable baluster stem with three grotesque mask scroll brackets, the lower part of the body chased twice with the figures of Ceres one with a sheaf of wheat the other with a cornucopia, and a further figure, possibly an oracle, the central band chased with the figure of a defecating woman, a winged figure breaking wind and a winged cherub, hung between with drapery swags and with laurel borders, the upper lobed border chased with grotesque masks, birds, a snail and fruit and foliage, engraved above with fruit and foliate scrolls, the detachable cover with foliage rim and three winged mermen, the finial an articulated figure of a man, operating a pump, the cover engraved with a monogram HTVT within a shield shaped cartouche, marked in base, the bowl rim with later Dutch control mark
A somewhat similar articulated finial is found on a spoon, thought to be Swiss, in a private collection. It is possible that this cup was a welcome for a society of Night-Soil men.
