No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more ENGLISH ELEGANCE: WORKS OF ART FROM HARTLEY PLACE For 40 years from the 1950s to the 1980s Sir Emmanuel and Lady Kaye sought out the finest quality 18th-century English furniture. For the late Sir Emmanuel (who built up Lansing Bagnall forklift trucks after the war) and Lady Kaye, English 18th Century decorative arts were a passion. At Hartley Place in Hampshire they created a magical English country-house, elegant and comfortable, somewhere to relax, and most importantly a home for their family. They were not interested in the obviously grand and the showy, but sought out appropriate pieces, always from the best sources, with a strong emphasis on quality and patina, but also on charm. They bought regularly at the Grosvenor House Fair, especially from Hotspur, Partridge, Norman Adams and Francis Egerton at Malletts, who gave particularly valued advice. And they carefully chose English glass, ceramics, enamels and pictures that would all work subtly together, to make a happy, gentle and peaceful home. Their great friend John Fowler, assisted in the room arrangement and in the careful placing of the pieces found for Hartley Place: he provided a delightful background for the cream of the Kaye's furniture, ceramics, glass and Dutch pictures. Lot Essay

The composition for the bas relief of the altar pedestals is inspired by Goethe's sentimental novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, 1774 and depicts Charlotte at Werther's Tomb. It derives from the 'charming' compositions of the 1780s executed by Elizabeth, Lady Templetown (d. 1823) (Vol. 22, Appendix J: 1.272). The Staffordshire Turner ceramic manufactory operated around the same time as the more famous Wedgwood manufactory, although it ceased production in the mid-19th Century.
