Each with sycamore banded hinged top inlaid with entwined foliate ribbon enclosing a green baize-lined playing-surface, above a plain frieze on square tapering legs headed by paterae, on block feet, one gateleg-action replaced, variations in crossbanding and construction

Lot Essay

A pair of mahogany card-tables with closely related entwined ribbon and foliage banded tops was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 7 November 1997, lot 60 (£38,900). This pair was illustrated in C. Claxton-Stevens & S. Whittington, The Norman Adams Collection, London, 1983, p. 327. An oval Pembroke table with almost identical banded decoration, possibly supplied en suite to the latter pair of tables, was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 18 October 2001, lot 236 ($19,975).
