The caned backs of these chairs are framed by an arched crest rail, a feature that appears only after 1700. Prior to that date, the crest rail was placed between the back posts, rather than on top of them (A. Bowett, 'The English 'horsebone' chair, 1685-1710', Burlington Magazine, May 1999, p. 269).
