Foaled in 1806 by Waxy (winner of the 1793 Derby) out of Prunella, this horse was originally called Pope and was bred by the Duke of Grafton for whom he won the 1809 Derby, starting as a complete outsider. After some other good wins he was sold to the Marquis of Sligo as a five-year-old, causing some confusion as there was already another good horse called Pope racing in Ireland. To differentiate them be became known as either Waxy Pope or Lord Sligo's Waxy. He won three races in Ireland before retiring to stud.
