Lot Essay

Thorburn's depictions of woodcock tend to show the birds nestling from the wind in the dunes or on the forest floor. It is unusual to see a composition with woodcock in flight. Woodcock migrate from Scandinavia every year reaching the east coast of Scotland in the autumn. They then spend the winter months in Great Britian. A similar watercolour entitled 'In from the North Sea' sold at Christie's, London, 30 September 1997, lot 66 (£37,800).
