Maze enjoyed using pastel to capture movement and rhythm. The formula of chalks had been improved and new pigments offered a larger range of nuances. Racing, sailing and rowing events provided ideal subjects and at Goodwood the artist could be found perfectly placed, practically in the middle of the racetrack, capturing the thunder and excitement of the galloping horses (see A. Singer, Paul Maze The Lost Impressionist, London, 1983, p. 115).
