Lot Essay

Cox visited Bettws-y-Coed annually from 1844 to 1856 and painted a number of views of the church and the surrounding area. The church depicted in the present watercolour was the focus for one of Cox's most famous works, The Welsh Funeral, 1848 (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery). David Cox was always a regular attendant at church and while he was in Wales he would attend the chapel at Bettws-y-Coed the road leading to which was almost exactly opposite the Royal Oak where Cox used to stay.
