Graham Reynolds dates the present drawing to 1820. This year he took Maria and his two children John Charles and Maria to stay with Archdeacon John Fisher in Salisbury. The visit was to become one of his longest and most productive sketching trips. Dated drawings from his stay extend from 13 July to 22 August. He then returned to London. By 1 September he had settled back in Hampstead and later in the year made a trip alone to Malvern Hall. It was towards the end of this year that Constable started work on The Hay Wain.
