The present drawing was made during Bonington's eleven week tour of Italy with his friend Baron Charles Rivet, whose diary records a stop in Genoa on their journey from La Spezia to Turin between 7 and 11 June. The Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox catalogue records that Dr. Marion Spencer confirmed that the inscription is in Bonington's hand and suggests that the number may be the last of several digits.
A pencil drawing inscribed 'Genoa', dated to 1826 is illustrated in C. Peacock, Richard Parkes Bonington, London, 1979, p. 64.
