Lot Essay

The present watercolour depicts the artist's three children, Gerald Carlyle, born November 1875, Eva Margaret, born February 1877 and Henry William, born 1882, at their lessons in the dining room of the family home, Sandhills, near Witley, Surrey, where they moved in June 1881. A finished watercolour showing the two elder children receiving lessons from their tutor also in the dining room at Sandhills is illustrated in I. Taylor, Helen Allingham's England, Exeter, 1990, p. 50.
