Stanley Anderson was born in Bristol, the son of an engraver, who set him to a seven year engraving apprenticeship after which he studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Anderson often chose to depict the routine human activities. His engravings and drypoint etchings are of great social and topographical interest, often depicting rural activities, which have now largely disappeared. The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford hold a complete collection of his engravings. His training as an engraver can be seen in his meticulous and careful style.
