Lot Essay

Having first visited Newlyn in 1880, Langley settled there in 1882. Credited as the founder of Newlyn's artistic community he is renowned for his dedicated depiction of the town's fisherfolk. The composition of the present work is closely related to Langley's oil painting of 1898 entitled, The End of the Story. In the oil painting, the same model is shown lost in thought in almost the same pose (see R. Langley, Walter Langley, Pioneer of the Newlyn Art Colony, Bristol, 1997, illustrated p. 106).
