Lot Essay

Executed circa 1913-14, this informal sketch was made in the garden of the restaurant Clos Norman in the village of Martin Église near Dieppe. The bearded figure facing out of the drawing is probably the artist himself, sporting the beard he grew in 1913, of which he was very proud. At that time the owner of the Clos Norman was Victor Lecour, whom Sickert painted on a number of occasions.
