Lot Essay

The figure of Paul Maze painting or sketching at one of 'The Season's sporting events, such as Henley, Cowes or the races at Goodwood was a common sight. Influential friends or patrons would reserve him a special place to stand and work from and he was a familiar figure at Cowes painting from the end of the pier of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The excitement and colour of such gatherings presented Maze with ideal subjects for some of his finest works.
