Lot Essay
Blenheim Palace, one of the finest examples of English Baroque architecture, was built for the Duke of Marlborough between 1705-22 to the designs of Sir John Vanburgh (1664-1726). A slightly more detailed version of the present composition was produced as a screenprint in 1988 (see O. Levinson, Quality and Experiment, The Prints of John Piper, London, 1996, no. 417, p. 138).
