A HELLENISTIC GOLD AND GARNET EARRING
Circa 2nd-1st Century B.C.
With a plain arching earwire joined to the back of a sheet disk by a thin strap, the disk centered by a bezel-set cabochon garnet, framed by filigree plain and spiral wires and fringed by a beaded wire, joined to a winged figure of Eros wearing a bandolier of plain wire punctuated by granulation, and a fillet of beaded wire wrapped with a thin strip, its ends falling to his shoulders, Eros holding a phiale in his right hand and a scroll in his left, a loop on his buttocks to receive the tapering end of the earwire
