AN ATTIC MARBLE FUNERARY STELE
Classical Period, Circa Early 4th Century B.C.
The upper portion of the tapering shaft with a recessed panel sculpted in shallow relief with a seated woman and a standing man, both with their heads lowered, clasping hands in a gesture of farewell, the woman seated on a diphros, her body sheathed in a himation wrapped over her chiton, her left hand supporting the elbow of her extended hand, the man with his weight on his left leg, his right slightly relaxed, his body wrapped in a himation, his right shoulder bare, his left hand clutching the folds along his chest, the stele crowned with a pediment carrying acroteria, once brightly painted, faint traces of which are still visible
