A ROMAN MARBLE MOSAIC PANEL
Circa 3rd Century A.D.
The square panel depicting a bust of the personification of the province of Africa, framed diagonally, wearing an elephant-hide headdress, the symbol of the province with the trunk, ears and upturned tusks visible above, a garment, possibly an animal skin, draped over her left shoulder and knotted at her chest, her dark hair arranged in tight curls that fall on to her shoulders, Venus rings on her neck, looking off to her right, framed within a wavy ribbon border
