We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution after examining the picture in person. Previously thought to be lost, he has pointed out that this is the original treatment of a composition known in two copies: the first, measuring 78 x 108 cm., is recorded in the 1912 catalogue of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyons; the second, on canvas and measuring 88 x 121 cm., was listed by Vroom as by Cornelis Cruys (private collection, Italy, formerly with D. Katz, Dieren; N.R.A. Vroom, A Modest Message as intimated by the painters of the 'Monochrome Banketje', Schiedam, 1980, II, p. 47, no. 214).
