Lot Essay

The artist is recorded in the records of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as having been a pupil of Pieter Brueghel II in 1599, and as having become a member of the Guild in 1602. Stylistically, his work is closer to that of Jan Brueghel I, and consists of flower garlands around medallions, and still lifes of flowers in urns that are similar to the present painting (see M.-L. Hairs, Les Peintre Flamands de Fleurs au XVII. Siècle, 1985, pp. 253-6). Comparable works to the present picture include a Still life of flowers in a vase sold, Paris, 12 June 1996, lot 9 ($43,461) and a Still life of flowers in a sculpted urn sold, Christie's, London, 22 April 1988, lot 89 (£23,000).
