Lot Essay

Mainly active in and around Pistoia, Leonardo was first recorded in 1516 when he valued a picture by Bernardino di Signoreccio together with Domenico di Piero, il Pisano. The features of the Infant Saint John the Baptist and the regular curly hair are characteristic of the artist's style and are similar to the Child in one of his three signed panels, a Madonna and Child of 1516 (Staatliche Museen, Berlin).

We are grateful to Everett Fahy for the attribution, he points out that the city in the background is Pistoia (letter, 2 November 2001).
