Lot Essay

W.G. Ehrlich is recorded at Bremerhaven 1868-1907 and between 1905 and 1911 he was using Johannsen movements, one of which is used in No. 598.
The scallop-plate on the bottom of the bowl is inscribed H.S.I. This indicates that it has seen service with the Royal Navy, but it is not recorded in the Chronometer Index of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. It was possibly one of those offered to the Hydrographer of the Royal Navy during World War Two when an appeal was made to the general public for any chronometers in private hands.
