A German ebony and ebonised silver-mounted striking altar clock

The case of tabernacle form surmounted by a silver figure of Chronos astride a globe, the architectural pediment below flanked by silvered figures of night and day after Michelangelo centred by a niche inset with a silver figure of Fortuna, the dial flanked by silver-mounted fluted columns and within a ripple moulded frame, the sides of the case flanked by volutes inset with silver panels decorated in wriggle work with fruit and leaves surmounted by silver spire finials, a silver panel below cast in relief with an allegorical scence depicting A Dance to the Music of Time, within a ripple moulding flanked by volutes mounted with silvered grotesque masks, the right side set with a sliding drawer running the width of the case behind the relief panel, concave moulding below with winged cherub mount applied with winged cherub silver mount to the front, the base with recessed silver-gilt panels applied with foliate open work mounts within ripple moulded frames flanked by silver lions heads and grotesque masks, on later rectangular base raised on silver bun feet, the 12 cm. x 14 cm. gilt dial signed Casper Pfaff with the Augsburg pineapple engraved between, the lower spandrels engraved with ribbon-tied fruiting garlands, the upper spandrels engraved with cloud-born cherubs, the narrow brass Roman chapter ring with steel hour and minute hands, the centre engraved with a rustic scene and now cut out for the moonphase aperture, the movement with brass plates secured with four square-section steel pillars, early-form fusee, the spring barrel with pinned steel cap, going barrel for the strike, the verge escapement with single-cocked foliate pierced S-form balance cock on the backplate with counter-balanced pendulum, the later countwheel mounted on the backplate with hammer arbor extending out striking on a bell housed within the brass rear door plate; case, dial and movement with alterations
