A Continental gilt-brass striking small weight-driven table clock
Probably German. Circa 1640
The case on plain spreading foot with later bun feet, gilt hinged side doors with rusticated arches, plain rear cover set with a suspension loop, the top with four later brass spire finials centred by a bell (now lacking balustraded superstructure), the dial engraved with flowerheads and foliage and riveted in the centre with a brass chapter ring with indistinct numerals, finely made single hour hand, the movement with brass square-section pillars comprising two trains, the going with verge escapement now converted to front-swinging pendulum, the strike train with countwheel on the backplate striking on a later bell; movement largely re-trained, alarm now lacking
